The lock at Westzaan used to spill water out into the sea, as the IJ was openly connected to the Zuiderzee in those days. In the second half of the nineteenth century the Noordzeekanaal was built and most of the expanse of the IJ was turned into arable lands.
To the left of this lock once stood the Portage Pub, run by the Lagerwey family. Next to it mr. Visser sold cigars and tabacco and in the house on the other side lived the lock keepers, the last of which was H. Kalf.
